THE WHISPERING DOG
I have a little something I'd like to whisper in your ear.
I know that you humans lead busy lives; some have to work; some have children to raise, or elderly parents to look after. It seems you are always rushing here and there, never noticing those very special moments in life.
Look at me now, while you sit there at your computer. See the way my dark eyes are looking into yours? They are slightly cloudy now - that comes with age - and grey hairs are beginning to show. You smile at me and I see deep affection in your eyes. What do you see in mine? Do you see a soul inside who loves you like no other? A spirit that would forgive your every wrong for just a moment of your time?
Please slow down, if only for that moment, to be with me while you can. Sometimes we die young and so suddenly that it hurts your heart. Sometimes we age slowly and you do not notice our frailty until the very end, when our last memories will be of looking at you with an old and wise heart, and touching you with a grizzled muzzle. The love is always there even when we must take that long sleep to run free in a distant land
Someday you will weep for me with deep grief in your soul and anger
in your heart because you expected more time to spend with me
and, because I love you, your sorrow will touch me and grieve me.
I may not be here tomorrow but we still have 'now'.
Today is our 'one more day' together.
Come to me not as 'alpha', 'trainer', or 'mum or dad' ; but as a member of a different species. Come, look into my eyes. What do you see? If you look hard and deep enough we will talk, you and I, heart to heart. I may tell you of the fun of chasing a ball, or I may tell you something profound about yourself or about life in general. You decided to have me in your life because you wanted to share such things with someone very different from you - and here I am. I am a dog but I feel emotion and I revel in the differences in our souls and spirits. I do not think of you as a 'dog with two feet'; you are a human being in all your quirkiness of haste and hurry. I know what you are and you can know what I am.
Come, sit with me on the floor. Enter my world and let time slow down, if only for a short while, and whisper into my ears. Speak with your heart, with your joy, and we will know eachother.
We may not have tomorrow.
